The Aviation Sector is an essential and growing element of the Australian Transport and Logistics Industry. It comprises five major components – domestic commercial aviation, international commercial aviation, general aviation, air freight transport and aviation support infrastructure.

  • General aviation involves a range of relatively smaller aircraft and helicopters to provide a variety of aviation services across Australia including regional charter services, agricultural crop dusting and spraying, air-borne emergency, rescue and medical services, air ballooning,
  • Air freight transport includes the freight forwarding and aircraft operations involved in moving freight within Australia and overseas by air.
  • Aviation support infrastructure including air traffic control, airport operations, aircraft maintenance, aircraft refuelling services and aircraft ticketing and passengers services.

Career pathways within the Aviation sector include those needed in flight operations – pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, etc., as well as those required for ground operations – customer service staff, baggage handlers, security staff, maintenance staff, airport operations, aircraft refuellers, reporting and management staff and freight forwarding and processing staff.Next time you are at the airport have a look around the types of occupations that are being undertaken and think about the support roles that are also needed to provide global air services.
